Rio Grande Grill opened it's
doors in 2007 when Ben Rushing his wife Sherry and son Logan had a
dream to open their own restaurant. Located in historical downtown
Harlingen TX on the West side of town in one of the old Van Buren
buildings, corner of Van Buren and South D Street, across from Diaz
Park.
Everyone in the family contributes
to the making of their delicious foods. Ben specializes in smoked
meats and built a unique smoking system. There is a lot of talk
around town about his delicious brisket, chicken, sausage, pulled pork
and ribs. Logan is a butcher and mentored with the best at Whole
Foods, the world's leading retailer of natural and organic foods.
One of Logan's specialties is his
sausage stuffed with poblano and cheese, a unique sausage found no where else in
the Valley. Sherry's recipes include the delicious macaroni and
potato salads and cold slaw, but what has really made a hit is the
poblano chili sauce you get with many of the Mexican dishes. When
they added Carmen, a 20 year chef specializing in Rio Grande style
Mexican food, they knew they had a winning combination.
When Ben bought the old Van Buren building he had a lot of work ahead of him. He commissioned
Chris
Valdez to paint two beautiful Mexican murals, one located inside on
the West wall and the colorful steer horns located on the exterior West
wall. Inside the decor is bright with neon lights and art pieces
from local artists. The bench tables are covered with bright
yellow plaid table cloths and are situated to bring the patrons together
in friendly conversation.
